    Ticket to the United States

I am an English teacher of the Shanghai Foreign Language Institute and have been training students preparing to come to the United States for further study. They are the backbone of the scientific and technological contingents of the People\u27s Republic of China. Their success in their study abroad will give great impetus to the realization of the four modernizations of China. To ensure their better survival and greater success in their study during the time they stay in the United States, I think it is significant to provide some material both in language and culture which students will find helpful in the situations they are sure to be involved in the United States. One year, from September 1983 to August 1984, my living and studying in the United. States enabled me to work on. this project which will serve the above mentioned purpose. The whole project consists of written material (conversation text), visual aids (slides) and audio aids (tape). The text covers 15 topics, each consisting of four parts: conversation, notes, questions for discussion and a role play. The slides and tapes, supporting the texts, provide specific cultural information. and the real speech. of the native speakers. The textbook is written with the particular vocabulary, colloquialisms, idiomatic expressions and forms of address used in different situations. The project is based on my own observations and experiences in the United States and I hope it will be useful for students coming to the United States

Dance Theater—The Physical Art of Perception

    Get PDF
This research analyzes the inner energy of human perception and the invisible effect and influence between perception and physical dance theatre. Not only the insight and interpretation of the relationship between the psychological and physical area, but also the analysis of aesthetics, thinking, and concept from a perceptual process to physical language in different works of physical dance theatre. In this way we come to understand how artists create works as a perceptual process, and how audiences perceive expression in terms of artists’ intention and intuition. Through physical movement in the theater and the language on the stage, people perceive creative thought as a reflection of the historical or current state of a society and changeable world. My thesis is a study of physical language in dance theatre with both psychological and physical analysis. Therefore, in the form of physical dance theatre, we feel the spirit inside their movement language, much like the conversation of a human self through the perception of a physical, theatrical, spiritual, psychological, and unknown world

Twitter sentiment analysis: applications in healthcare and finance

    Get PDF
This research explores the influence of Twitter sentiment on healthcare and finance industries. It assesses how Twitter sentiment and culture measure influence COVID-19 statistics, and it investigates the impact of Twitter sentiment on S&P 1500 stock mispricing. Furthermore, it examines how tweet sentiment predicts major industry returns. The first part examines how Hofstede’s Culture Dimensions (HCD) and Twitter economic uncertainty index (TEU) relate to COVID-19 infection rate and death rate. The results show certain aspects in HCD, such as power distance index (PDI) and masculinity (MAS) both are negatively and significantly associated with the infection rate, while indulgence (IVR) and long-term orientation (LTO) exhibit negative statistical significance to the death rate. TEU based in USA is relevant to COVID-19 death rate in short run (up to 3 months). Some practical strategies are proposed for public health officials to help mitigate COVID-19 spread. The second part bridges a research gap by exploring the relation between aggregated tweet contents and stock market mispricing. In short, tweet features affect future stock mispricing, in different directions and magnitudes. For overvalued stocks, tweet variables including proportion of external links, average number of words, percentage of retweets, likes and replies are negatively associated with mispricing of S&P 1500 stocks. Average number of words possibly reduces mispricing by reducing idiosyncratic volatility, while proportion of external links can mitigate mispricing via channels other than liquidity or idiosyncratic volatility. For undervalued stocks, only average number of words is positively related to mispricing; average number of words affect mispricing via channels other than liquidity or idiosyncratic volatility. Additionally, this study investigates how tweet sentiment from S&P 1500 firms predicts major industry returns by constructing multiple sentiment indices. The robustness tests show highly consistent results, proving such indices can predict the returns from three out of five major industries, including Consumables, High Technology and Healthcare. In general, the sentiment index type and prediction length do not matter much. In conclusion, this research shows tweet sentiment is more than some meaningless noise. Instead, it has beneficial applications in both healthcare and finance fields, such as COVID-19 pandemic prediction and possible investment reference

BBR-induced Stark shifts and level broadening in helium atom

The precise calculations of blackbody radiation (BBR)-induced Stark shifts and depopulation rates for low-lying states of helium atom with the use of variational approach are presented. An effect of the BBR-induced induced Stark-mixing of energy levels is considered. It is shown that this effect leads to a significant reduction of lifetimes of helium excited states. As a consequence the influence of Stark-mixing effect on the decay rates of metastable states in helium is discussed in context of formation processes of the cosmic microwave background

Performance of electronic dispersion compensator for 10Gb/s multimode fiber links

    Get PDF
In high-speed optical links, electronic compensation circuits can be utilized to greatly improve the data transmission performance limited by fiber dispersion. In this paper, we develop a full link model, including multimode fibers, optical/electronics/optical components, clock-and-data recovery and electronic compensation circuits. The performance of various electronic compensation techniques, such as feed-forward equalizer and decision feedback equalizer for optical multimode fiber is investigated and numerically evaluated. Finally, a comparison of the performance of each compensation techniques and a proposal of optimal equalizer circuit implementation, achieving a 10-Gb/s transmission over 1-km standard multimode fiber are presented

The Influence of Corporate Social Relations on the Stability of Strategic Alliances

Our study aims to verify the effects of social relations, opportunistic behavior and trust among partners on the stability of strategic alliance. In order to test the hypotheses, 221 valid questionnaires collected from top managers of 50 strategic alliances in China. Moreover, the results also indicate that contractual governance can moderate the influence of high-level social relations on opportunistic behavior and trust between partners. It is found that the social relationship of senior managers cannot directly affect the stability of the alliance but can negatively affect the opportunistic behavior and positively affect the trust between partners. Opportunistic behavior and trust among alliance partners affect the stability of strategic alliance negatively and positively, respectively. Contract governance can enhance the influence of senior managers' social relationships on opportunistic behavior. In addition, contract governance shows the inverted U-shaped moderating effects on the relationship between senior managers' social relations and trust.
